Things to do During the Commute

Saturday, July 8, 2017

Also known as: How To Survive Traffic. It's inevitable; commuting is a part of one's everyday life when they enter the workforce. Unless you drive. But then I find that commuting can save more money and can be less stressful since there's a driver and all you have to do is sit there. I have to admit though, just sitting there consumes a lot of time. Here are some things I do to make sure I don't get bored while commuting.

LISTEN TO PODCASTS

Stay curious and inspired! I do this through podcasts. I have a Cast Box app installed on my phone. There are many ideas, tips and advice, insights and hacks, on various topics that you can pick up just by listening to podcasts. You really just have to choose which ones to subscribe to. There are some podcasts that just ramble about things not really related to what they should be talking about, so I end up deleting these. Some podcasts have great ideas, and it urges me to write about, or incorporate it to my lifestyle. I'd like to share with you my favorite podcasts:

Which podcasts do you listen to, or would recommend? I'd love to subscribe to new ones!

LISTEN TO MUSIC

I don't think this would ever be out of everyone's list of things to do! My challenge for myself is to look at different genres as much as possible. Don't be limited to what you usually listen to. It always feels great whenever you discover something you never knew you'd like, but just because you tried it once, you get to grow and diversify your playlist. Some albums on repeat on Spotify:

Oohyo and The Black Skirts, respectively! ♡♡ Oohyo's songs are pretty rad, and The Black Skirts is just plain awesome music; Team Baby is his recent album.

Any band/song recommendations you'd like to give? :-)

READ ARTICLES

Learning never stops. I don't read articles while commuting (I easily get dizzy), but I do so whenever I fall in line. Through this app, you'll be able to discover articles by swiping right. You can also choose lists in which you can place topics you are interested in, so that the app will find articles related to it. Here are some interesting articles I found through an app called StumbleUpon

Dimensions of Body Language
Learning New Skills
Review of Emotional Intelligence
Turning Small Talk Into Smart Conversation

Articles are generated randomly on my phone, so I don't have the links to these.

WATCH YOUR FAVORITE SHOWS ON YOUR PHONE

I have Viu, a free app wherein you can download Korean dramas. Downloaded episodes will be stored for 7 days only, so make sure to watch it within the week. Lately I've been watching Fight for My Way featuring Park Seo Joon and Kim Ji Won ♡♡♡♡♡ this app helps me catch up on my favorite shows, and helps me unwind after a long day.

I have a list of my watched K-dramas here!

SAVE ROOM FOR INTROSPECTION

Or maybe you could put your phone inside your bag and be alone with your thoughts. Take mental notes of how your day will be like, and how you envision yourself doing them. Make bullet points for things you need to do throughout the day. I see my time in my commute as a way for me to prepare myself for the day ahead, and also as when I go home, it is a time for me to reflect. Time spent in commuting does not have to be a waste of time. No matter how frustrated you get, at the end of the day what matters is how you make the most out of it.

What do you do whenever you commute? Do share with me :-)

  1. Great list! Actually the reason why I almost never go out anymore is because it's so tiring to just go from one place to another ;___;

I've always heard about podcasts but I've never tried listening to any! Only because I didn't know what app to use, etc. So thanks for this! I've been wanting to listen to The Minimalists' podcast so I'll do that! For music, I like to listen to Heize mostly! I also listen to Primary a lot. I listen to these two a lot while I work on posts. Upbeat but very chill. So I think they'll be great for listening to while on the road as well :)

    1. Thank you Chai! Indeed, traffic can be very frustrating; I don't think it will improve any time soon here in Manila huhu.

You can find Cast Box for free on the app store! :) The Minimalists' podcasts are uploaded weekly. Enjoy!
Heize! She sounds familiar; I think I've watched one of her videos on youtube. I'll download her songs on my phone :) It's my first time to hear about Primary; I'll go check him out. I listen to Mad Clown though :D He's the cutest Korean rapper for me hehe!!
Thank you so much for your recommendations :D

  5. I used to take a bus to and from campus everyday and if I wasn't chatting to friends, I liked to listen to music and take time to think and reflect. I have a very introspective character and these commutes were an opportunity to get lost in my thoughts. Listening on Spotify was also really good because they'd play random songs that I'd get to discover and love. I must start listening to podcasts and they're such a great alternative and something different. And I hadn't heard of the viu app but I'll check it out as dramas on the go sounds great.

Thanks for sharing this list! New reader and looking forward to reading more from you :)

    1. Commuting with a friend makes the commute faster! I have to agree with you too, that commutes give the perfect opportunities to get lost in our thoughts.
Podcasts are fun! It's a great way to discover new ideas, and to learn new things as well. Try the Viu app! It's for free and has high quality videos, and can be stored for up to a week. :)

Thank you so much Beverley, I've followed you on Bloglovin'. Looking forward to read yours, too! :)

As for podcasts, you can download Castbox. It's a free app on the google playstore in which you can subscribe to podcast channels and get regular updates when they upload new ones. Enjoy!
